On November 10, 2011, Vice President Xi Jinping met in the Great Hall of the People with Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Christine Lagarde. The two sides exchanged opinions on the global economic situation and the Chinese economy, reform of the international currency system and strengthening the functions of the IMF.

Xi pointed out that the recovery of global economy is slowing down and looks grim. Countries should strengthen cooperation to tide over the difficulties and give priority to preventing the spread of European debt crisis. China is an important strategic partner of the EU. China supports the efforts of the EU and the ECB to solve the crisis and hopes the IMF plays an active role to handle the crisis and maintain global financial stability.

Expressing admiration on Lagarde's efforts of reforming the IMF, Xi said that China is willing to work with the IMF to make contributions to reforming the IMF, improving global economic governance and stimulating global economic recovery.

Lagarde noted that to maintain stable and relatively fast growth of the Chinese economy has irreplaceable significance to the stability and development of the world. Her organization will work with countries to implement the consensus of the G20 Cannes Summit Communiqué on the reform of the IMF and the international monetary system and jointly cope with the current crisis.

Governor of the People's Bank of China Zhou Xiaochuan and Vice Foreign Minister Zhai Jun attended the meeting.
